I love my husband with all of my heart, but this venture of his was nothing short of foolish.

He wished for us to reclaim a small village abandoned by his great grandfather, yet none of us have an upbringing or education in farming. He claimed it would be easy, that “if the uneducated provincials can make their living farming, then surely we can too.”

But I am not so confident, we were both born to stone walls and paved streets, as were the slaves we brought with us. We know the trials and challenges of navigating a city and its many characters, not the wilderness that becomes as still as death in the pitch black night.

After raising my concerns that the slaves quarters look much like our own, he assured me that the collapsed building on the other side of the garden is what we will be living in once it's remade into a beautiful villa.

I must admit it would be quite the remarkable home after living in an insula our entire marriage. The children have even dragged a chest there and started to pretend as if the structure is already complete and we're already living inside.

But I fear that they will be disappointed. Such an endeavor may take months or years. And where will the money come from?

One of the slaves returned to us out of breath, exclaiming that the fortress to the north has a group of outlaws living inside.

I refuse to stay here any longer.

If my husband wishes to risk his safety and our very livelihood on his stubbornness, fine. But I will not risk the childrens' lives, or my own, on his confidence. I am taking them with me and heading to the city in the morning.

It became an argument, he promised he would be able to send for the guards before the outlaws even realize we're here.

But what if they already know?

After my last entry, I have decided to leave my journal here.

I know you will be reading this and trying to understand why I have chosen to leave. Read my own words, when I thought no one else would see them.

I have not abandoned you, only this place.

When you wish to return to us, we will be in the city.
