How I yearn for the company of scholars and intellectuals.

Instead, I am trapped here, in this town where few understand my desires and interests. Father would rather have me work my fingers to the bone in a mine shaft as he does, and his father did, and his father's father's father did.

Does he not see that I have no interest in these affairs? I do not wish to be a miner, or a woodcutter, or a huntsman, or a smith. I want to be an alchemist! A scholar! A man of knowledge!

Mother has discussed with him about sending me to Tindrem for a year to stay with my uncle Faustus, but I know that I am doomed to stay here.
