Text:
You may think of the Tribe Rats as frightful creatures that scurry around in the darkest corners, scooping up pets and small children never to be seen again. I write this guide to challenge this notion and present the reader with the several kinds of Tribe Rats that I have encountered or heard of in my travels.
The aggressive sort which dwells just out of sight and attacks when approached is but one of many species scattered throughout the known world, but they are the most well-known due to their aforementioned aggression and proximity to civilization.
They are an extremely territorial species that typically avoid direct contact when left alone. However, they are not unintelligent. Like many other Tribe Rats, they have been observed rearing the pups of Night Snatchers, and they unanimously form semi-structured societies that intermingle two species of Tribe Rat.
They prove themselves to be cunning time and time again and will present an even greater danger to any who might think these bipedal rodents have the minds of simple beasts incapable of planning or forethought.
The next sort are rather difficult to encounter to those who do not know their locations, and I dare not reveal the ones most familiar to me, lest others who wish them ill will find their way to them.
The rodents I speak of are rather shy of human society and live in mountains and forests. Their fur is typically gray or brown in color, resembling common mice much more than their rat-like counterparts. They build their simple, tiny homes out of grass, clay, and branches—some crafting huts while others seem content with small burrows.
Several groups I've found are even open to trade, though they typically value practical goods they can make use of over curiosities and trinkets.
The third sort I have only encountered second-hand; told to me by a Sarducaan friend of mine. He described desert Tribe Rats with large ears and long legs that raise bats in the mountain caves, an element I have also seen in the Tribe Rats I'm familiar with.
Just like the Tribe Rats of forests that can be found in Myrland, these Tribe Rats are said to only be found far away from human civilization. When I asked my good friend his theory on why that often seems the case for more peaceful creatures, he simply suggested looking no further than the swords, spells, and bows of man.
A grim but likely theory.
A fourth kind of Tribe Rat, which I have only managed to find evidence of in writings, are the small-eyed and large-toothed ones with uncharacteristically small ears found exclusively underground that walk on all fours, though little else is written of them beyond their peculiar, highly specialized forms.
