nave

Introduction

Nave is the third planet from Sunna in the solar system, the worship of Nave as a goddess is far from unheard of, and she is the planetary setting for Mortal Online and Mortal Online 2. The use of the word Nave is very intentional, and has several in-world meanings:

  • In the ancient past people believed Nave was the center of the universe, and as such the planet was the Nave or hub of the universe.
    • Although this theory is now mostly abandoned for a heliocentric model, the name still lives on.
  • Nave also can refer to the central part of a church, i.e. the area reserved for mortals, as opposed to the clergy or the sanctuary.
  • Nave is the ship of mortals that travels through space and time.
  • Nave is also the “navel”—the central part or point of a Human—and what connects the fetus to its mother.

The planet herself consists of the major continents of Myrland, Herabalter, Urmothâr, Sidoia, Sarducaa, and Nordveld, with a fair number of additional smaller landmasses such as Isla Piska and the Irminian Isles. Further, her surface is home to number of unusual phenomena such as the Flow of Pontos, the Mouth of Thalassa, and the Shards of Skadi.

History

The Sundering of Asterra

"Nature hath altogether taken away certaine Lands: and first and formost where as now the sea Corallis is, it
was sometime the Continent for a mightie space of ground. The very earth hath devoured and split her selfe:
Thus, she disjoyned Haeres Balteus, Lycia and Myro Lanarius, and from all those three, Boreamontes and
Assarida, as if the very stronds and Continent were not to be trusted, but they also must worke hurt and
mischiefe."

– Marcella I, Naturalis Historiae, Liber II, XCI

Most historical knowledge of the planet itself begins with or shortly prior to The Sundering of Asterra, a cataclysmic event of unclear cause and circumstance which saw the supercontinent of Asterra torn apart, and even caused a sizeable portion of the planet sink into the sea. Further, the event marked the end of the Shinarian Civilization and supposedly also the Sith Pari Civilization.

Urmothâr—or as the Tindremenes call it, Lykia—in the south-east, Sidoia in the south-west, Sarducaa in the west, and Nordveld in the north-west fell apart from Myrland, as the tectonic plates of the southern hemisphere sunk several hundred meters into the ocean. This left a huge landmass fault and an enormous waterfall, hundreds of meters steep, between the Inner Sea in the north and the Coral Sea in the south, called Tecton's Fault.

The former land bridge between Myrland and Nordveld became an island, and two enormous bridges were constructed by the Tindremenes to link Myrland, Sarducaa, and Nordveld together once again. The Tindremenes would not allow this opportunity to go unused, however. It was not long until an occupation of Sarducaa was attempted, and later a failed invasion of Nordveld which would lead to the alienation of their Huérgar allies and the loss of their ancient alliance.

The Conflux

Nave would later experience another disaster known as The Conflux at the start of the Tindremic Empire's decline following their foiled efforts in Nordveld and Sarducaa, as she was racked by unrelenting earthquakes. Most notably, the Bridge of Tecton collapsed and portions of Tindrem sunk in part or in whole leading to the loss of irreplaceable knowledge as well as leaving the Armillogion in a state of irreparability.

The Age of Unrest

In the wake of The Conflux, the slow decline of the Tindremic Empire had truly begun in earnest. Over a century passed as it lost control of territories. This naturally led to a general state of unrest washing over Myrland, setting the stage for Mortal Online.

Countless petty warlords vied for control over Myrland during this period, only briefly coming together to repair the Bridge of Tecton, whereupon the warlords extended their bloodletting to the continent of Sarducaa as well.

The Irruption

Marking the end of The Age of Unrest was yet another calamity, one far worse than The Conflux. The Tagmaton Irruption was perhaps the worst epidemic Nave had ever experienced, etched into recorded history with the blood of those whom it claimed.

First came the Fleshbiters, black clouds of footlong locusts devouring crops and cattle alike. Following in the devastating wake of the Fleshbiters came six legged slayers of varying castes. Towering above men, bearing scythes, burrowing below ground and releasing venomous projectiles, nothing could stand in their way.

However, when all seemed lost, a number of great earthquakes shook the ground leaving a new set of scars on Nave's surface before—for whatever inscrutable reason—the numberless Tagmatons suddenly dispersed even faster than they had once appeared. From whence they came no one is sure—where they went, no one knows.

The damage was far beyond the destruction to the physical, however. Myrland for example had become desolate and barren, and by the end it is estimated that more than two thirds of the humanoid population on the continent succumbed to the slaughter or perished in the years of starvation to come. The newly reconstructed Bridge of Tecton lay in ruins, effectively severing the land link between Myrland and the western continents.

In the west, Sarducaa fared significantly better, and on Nordveld it was primarily the continent's southern settlements that met the same fate as Myrland. Eastern records from this period are scarce, but the Khurites have speculated that the continent of Urmothâr must have been minimally impacted, as aid from their allies among the Sith Alvarin after the disaster were plentiful.

Present Day

At least a century has passed since The Irruption shook and scarred both Nave's surface and her peoples. The Tindremic Empire has returned to some degree of form, actively warring with the Khurite Allied Tribes on Myrland and potentially preparing for another invasion of Nordveld. The Sarducaan Empire is stronger than ever, by some accounts Nordveld as well as Urmothâr are flourishing, and the Risar have once more began their incursions into Myrland from Herabalter.

This is the setting of Mortal Online 2.
